November’s Past & Present Pic takes us to the northwest corner of Sutphin Street and Lake Avenue South, where today stands the studios of KBJR and KDLH TV. The Duluth Bethel, founded by Reverend C. C. Salter of Duluth’s Pilgrim Congregational Church,  was built here in 1888; in 1911 the building became the People’s Hotel and Tavern, the scene of a notorious killing in 1921. It was demolished in 1948. You can read more about the Bethel here.

  1. The Bethel pictured was east of Lake Ave and north of Sutphin (NE corner of the intersection)

The “Red Light” district was pretty much between the Bethel on Lake Ave and St Croix Ave(the old 1AveE).
