John H. Darling built his observatory at 910 West Third Street in 1912. It operated until 1965, when it was taken over by the University of Minnesota Duluth and the telescope was moved to the Marshall W. Alworth Planetarium. The building’s site is now Observation Park. Read more about the building’s history here.

The answer to last week’s Carved in Stone photo is the carving appears on the Marshall Wells building, now the Meierhoff Building in the Canal Park Business District. The reason we said Zenith City Online is fond of it is because it inspired our logo.
