Welcome to the August 2012 edition of Zenith City Online. Earlier this summer Duluth was saddened by the tragic drowning of a young man in Lake Superior near the Lakewalk. he was swimming from Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum to shore when he went under. Following the even, we noticed a great deal of traffic in the Zenith City Archives for our history of the Mausoleum, actually the ruins of a gravel hopper. So our feature story this month is about the corner of lake, now a center of tourism, but once the site of an outer harbor—and much of it, like much of Uncle Harvey’s Mausoleum, may still be beneath the water Lake Superiors. Our columnists have more fun and fascinating tales for you as well. Heidi Bakk-Hansen introduces us to Nehemiah Hulett and his namesake, Hulett C. Merritt, considered the “black sheep” of Duluth’s Merritt clan. David Ouse’s forgotten Duluthian was perhaps the last fur trapper from the Zenith City—and the subject of a documentary—while Jim Heffernan remembers playing in Lincoln Park as a child. Near the end of the month historian Maryanne C. Norton answers two questions about long-gone Duluth eateries, and my Lost Landmark for August will be Duluth’s Imperial Flour Mill, once the largest grain processing plant on the planet. So enjoy the stories, dig through the archives, like us on Facebook, subscribe to daily updates 9lower left-hand corner), and tell your friends to visit. Thanks!

Jim:
I have two color litho postcards of the McGonagle. Looks like it was white on top, black on the bottom—but you can’t always trust those old postcards, as some liberties were taken with colorization. Email me at info@zenithcity.com and I will send them to you on Friday (heading out of town tomorrow). — Tony D.
