May 15, 1877: Birth of Duluth actor Hugh Cameron

On this day in 1877, future Duluthian Hugh Cameron was born in Quebec. Born Coral Oscar Hugh Cameron, Cameron and his family moved to Duluth in about 1891, and he went by Coral at that time, working as a clerk at the J. E. Haynie & company dry goods store on the 100 block of West Superior Street. Just two years after moving to Duluth over 11,000 Duluthians voted him their favorite “salesman, saleslady, or office worker” in Duluth. His prize was a trip tot the Chicago World’s Columbian Expedition, where he acquired a taste for big city life. He started going by “Hugh” and turned to acting, first in San Francisco, then back in Duluth, and then on to Broadway, starring in over 30 productions from 1903 to 1930. Between 1920 and 1939 he appeared in over 15 films. Read more about Hugh Cameron here.
