Houghton, Michigan, native William Schiller arrived in Ashland, Wisconsin, in 1878 at age 18 and established the Schiller Shoe Company. In 1885 he moved to Superior and opened a second Schiller’s Shoes at 1106 Tower Avenue. Williams died in 1920. There is a mural in Ashland, Wisconsin, depicting Williams and his store. The store once made a pair of size 50 shoes as “proof” that Paul Bunyon once lived in the Ashland area. You can read about it here. Discover more Ghost Signs of Duluth and Superior here.
