Who Remembers Superior’s Northern Brewing Billboard?

During the 1950s and 1960s a billboard advertising the Northern Brewing Co. stood in Superior along Highway 2 where it crossed the Nemadji River near the Great Northern Ore Docks. We know it had a working clock on it, but no one we’ve talked with who remembers the billboard can recall what the sign said or if it contained any sort of image. So, if you remember what the billboard looked like—or if you know where we can find a photograph of the billboard—please let us know in the comments below. We’d like to describe it or use the picture in our upcoming book on the historic breweries of Duluth and Superior.

Well, I don’t know about this super-cool sign, but I do know that I’m now looking forward to this book.

I remember the sign and I have a large bottle of Northern Pale from Northern Beer …… I will take a picture and email it to you if you want.

Richard, do you remember what the sign said and/or if it had a picture on it?

Don’t remember the billboard, but sure remember the beer. You could buy a 30 oz bowl of that swill for $.30 @ Annie & Harry Goldberg’s North Star Tavern, right at the foot of the bridge.

I remember the billboard- but only the clock. I’d go past it at least once a week in the summers when we’d go to the lake – from the time I was a baby until I was 16.
