Wilfred Sykes

Built in 1949 by the American Shipbuilding Company of Lorain, Ohio, the Wilfred Sykes was declared “one of the largest ore boats on the Great Lakes.” Named for an Inland Steel Company president, it is also the most modern boat featured in this book. Superior’s Fraser Shipyard converted her to a self-unloader over the winter of 1974–75. She still plies the waters of the Great Lakes. This card is unique for two reasons: it is a linen card printed after 1945, and it has a white border, rarely found on linen cards.
